Out of Context wants to change the way the average American lives with art. This is why they are integrating it into rooms where most people spend a considerable amount of their day - like the kitchen. "Art is too important to be relegated to the formal rooms we hardly ever use," said company spokesperson Barbara Hodosh. "It should be a part of our everyday lives."
Citing a perceived void in the marketplace, Hodosh, a designer, along with husband and architect Jonathan Hodosh, founded the New York based venture to market decorative panels, surrounds and enclosures. Each piece is custom created by recognized artists, who are bringing their creative vision from the canvas to the home. Out of Context’s first products, a line of panels designed for use on major kitchen appliances, such as Sub-Zero and other built-in style refrigerators, are scheduled to debut April 5-7, at the national Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago.
"We’re very excited to be working with such a talented and diverse team of artists and craftspeople," said Jonathan Hodosh. "We’ll be showing a new paper mache sculpture on canvas by Maria Winston, a panel created by Dolly McCaskill using an ancient Chinese technique called ‘coromandel’, a fused glass and metal sculpture by Meko Designs, a hand-painted wood mosaic created by Bill Godfrey, a Plexiglas-mounted cibachrome print by photographer Victor Gagliardi, one of Carol Owen’s spirit houses, a tapestry by Sheila O’Hara and a M. Kungl offset litho print."
"We think the time is right for this idea," stated Barbara Hodosh. "Every day, we work with clients who are spending a great deal of time and money on their kitchens, purchasing custom cabinets, granite countertops, state-of-the-art appliances. The kitchen is the room of the house where the average family spends most of their waking hours and they want everything just so. Yet, when it comes to the refrigerator, the only real choices are black, white, stainless steel or a wooden panel that matches the cabinet doors. That’s very limiting. We plan to allow them an almost infinite array of choices. They can choose by color, by style or by theme. We can even make a custom panel to their exact specifications."
"We were a little nervous when we first started testing the concept. While it made a lot of sense to us, we weren’t sure initially how other people would react. The idea of putting art in the kitchen ñ on the fridge of all places ñ just felt kind of radical. But we’ve tested the concept pretty extensively and, so far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. I guess it’s just the next step in the evolution of the kitchen as the center of family life."
